Reaching out to our Overseas Neighbours

Health and Education Projects - Pakistan

PakistanEducation is one of the most urgent needs in Pakistan today. Approximately 75 per cent of the population is illiterate. The Sisters of St John of God are involved in primary and secondary education and provide adult literacy programs in Lahore and Sargodha. Around 1,500 children from low-income homes, both Christian and Muslim, attend these schools.

Adult education, allows women to shop, read the labels on medication and help their children study. Care and counselling also gives them more independence and a greater self-esteem.

Significant work is also being undertaken in the area of primary and public health. A community outreach team delivers health services, such as antenatal care, to eight Pakistani villages. Care and counselling are also provided to people living with HIV/AIDS and to patients with tuberculosis.
