Advocating for the Vulnerable

St John of God Women's Program for Female Ex-offenders

AdvocatingThis program was established in 1998. It is a partnership between the Sisters of St John of God and Outcare and provides information and support to women in prison and their families.

Weekly interviews are conducted with prisoners at Bandyup and Nyandi Womens Prison, on a one-to-one basis to help them organize their future. Plans are drawn up and discussed with them, in relation to accessing benefits, the prospects of employment, the needs of their children and how to face the problem of moving back into society.

There are lots of particular issues for these women like mending relationships, the temptations of alcohol and beating the desire to re-offend.

Come Hear Program

St John of God Foundation funds this program, which is co-ordinated by the Speech and Hearing Centre in Perth. St John of God Health Care Subiaco provides an operating theatre free of charge and a local surgeon operates at no cost.

The aim of the program is to increase access for financially disadvantaged children to ear, nose and throat surgery.

Let's Talk Playgroup

Funded by St John of God Foundation, this playgroup offers children with speech and language difficulties the opportunity to improve their skills and confidence in speech. Education is also provided for parents by a special speech therapist for the deaf.

The Living Centre (Catholic AIDS Pastoral Care) Embroidery

The Sisters of St John of God, in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Perth, fund this service which provides counselling and pastoral care services for people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
