Caring For Our Youth

St John Of God Foundation 'Horizon House' project

The first Horizon House was established in Geelong, Victoria and has been fully operational since August 1999. Following the success of this home and the proven results in the reintegration of 'at risk' youth back into the community, St John of God Foundation began looking at other communities that would benefit from the introduction of this program.

The Horizon House project is founded on the Vision that every child lives within a family environment and community, that fosters trust and love which supports young people to grow and develop holistically.

Our mission is to reduce homelessness amongst young people within our community through establishing homes which will provide the care and family environment that these young people have never had before.

With a focus on providing long term housing, care and intensive support to young people aged between 15 and 22 years, who would otherwise be homeless, the Horizon House mission is to provide a model of care and support in a family environment for young people at risk. The project provides accommodation, life skills, education, intensive case management, counselling and socialization.

Primary carers live with the young people 24 hours a day 7 days a week, with support from a secondary carer and a team of volunteers. There is no staff rotation, giving the young people a sense of stability and security and allowing the development of trust.

'Horizon House' is about the journey rather than destination. It is based on inclusivity, connectedness, understanding, relationships, responsibility and empowerment, agreements and commitments.
