Their going to Beagle Bay on the Dampier Peninsula in 1907 caused great alarm; the Sisters and those advising them were concerned for the welfare of women who ventured so far into the unknown. Conditions in Beagle Bay Mission were tough, harsh, lonely and frustrating. The climate was extremely taxing because of the tropical heat and rain.
The Sisters, led by Mother Antonio O’Brien, showed great courage in their commitment to the Aboriginal Community at Beagle Bay, and this commitment was expressed through the provision of Education and Health Care.
They were the first sisters to minister among the Aboriginal people in Western Australia and remained partners in good times and in challenging times for over one hundred years. |
