Geelong, Victoria 1974

SisterHoly Cross Hospital Geelong, Victoria owned and administered by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, had to withdraw their services and the hospital was to go on the market.

To preserve a Catholic hospital in the City, Monsignor James Murray, Parish Priest of Geelong sought the services of the Sisters of St John of God through Cardinal James Robert Knox. The Sisters were invited to manage the hospital.

The Sisters of St John of God accepted the challenge and in February 1974 took over its administration. Eventually, the hospital was purchased and renamed St John of God Hospital. www.sjog.org.au

Sisters of St John of God have become well known and loved in Geelong and continue to be a vital part of the local parish and hospital community.
