Goulburn, New South Wales 1916
Dreams and visions of a number of people came together with the establishment of Sisters of St John of God at Goulburn. Frank and Anastasia Kelly donated money for a Catholic Hospital in the City.
Bishop John Gallagher, bishop of Goulburn and Bishop Joseph Higgins of Ballarat came to Perth for the Consecration of Arcbishop Patrick Joseph Clune. When in Western Australia, both men visited Subiaco where a plan was developed for Sisters of St John of God to come to Goulburn and bring the dreams to a reality.
The Sisters responded to the request and travelled from Subiaco,
Western Australia by boat to Sydney, then by train to Goulburn. They
stayed with the Sisters of Mercy while supervising extensive alterations
and renovations to the thirteen roomed house, before taking it over
as a hospital and living quarters for the Sisters. The opening ceremony
of the hospital was on Sunday 2 April, 1916.
Over the years, the Sisters at Goulburn have adjusted and changed with the growing and changing needs of the district, and have benefited greatly through the generous collaboration of local people and caregivers.
