Northam, Western Australia 1947
The Sisters of St John of God opened a maternity hospital in Northam 1947. Early that year a deputation from the Northam parish visited Subiaco to seek Sisters to provide maternity services in the area. One of the difficulties for the people and new migrants in Northam at that time, was the necessity for mothers to travel to Perth for peri-natal care and confinement.
The Sisters responded to meet the needs and went Northam. The people had identified a house that would serve the purpose of a hospital. With alterations and a succession of renovations the Sisters kept pace with changing health care needs.
The hospital remained in operation until 1970 when a new Regional Hospital was built by the state government.
Sisters of St John of God continue to have contact with the people of Northam.
