Refugee Education

St John of God Sisters have involvement in ‘The Christian Meditation Community, Western Australia’, facilitating and participating in group meditation on a weekly basis.

Our Sisters are involved with refugees in two capacities - one with the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) and the other with the Community Support for Refugees (CSR).

The AMEP is a program which provides basic English tuition to migrants and refugees from non-English speaking backgrounds. The program aims to help clients achieve fundamental English skills needed to function in society at a reasonable level.

The CSR helps newly-arrived refugees feel welcome through friendship and support.

Both of these programs play a crucial role in reducing a sense of isolation and disconnection for refugees. They also assist them in establishing contact with neighbours, places of worship, sporting organisations and linking them up with their particular ethnic associations.
