Sister Ann (Cullinane)Interview with Sister Ann (Cullinane)

For those who may not know you will you tell us your name and what you do?

I'm Ann Cullinane -; A Sister of St. John of God -; I currently work in the area of Vocations Promotion.

You were once a busy nurse administrator in a demanding acute hospital. I understand that prior to your current Vocations role you worked as a Parish Associate. Can you tell us what brought you to that?

Having spent many years as a nurse in various capacities -; I felt the call to renewal. This experience led me to a greater understanding of self and God's call to a new ministry.

What did you find the most life-giving aspect of that role?

Visiting young families prior to Baptism of their children; also visiting the sick, dying and bereaved.

What did you find the most challenging?

Preparing talks for special important occasions, for example Mass for parents who have lost a baby.

There seems to be such diversity of works that your Sisters do now and corresponding lifestyles which support them - how is this role reflected in the sisters' corporate vision and mission?

By showing compassion for the sick, needy and bereaved. Helping people who are seeking to know God more deeply through RCIA [Right of Christian Initiation for Adults] process and small Christian Communities. Networking with outreach associations who are also involved in the Mission of Jesus.

As well as shifting works and living situations in contemporary religious life, many sisters have developed a vibrant spiritual life. What has been the most significant change in your spiritual life?

Greater appreciation for creative liturgies, sharing and being empowered by the laity. Love of the Scripture and quiet time.

Which of your spiritual books has the most worn cover?

The Office Book -; The Prayer of the Church.

How does your spirituality influence what you do -; your ministry?

By placing my complete trust in God, and handing over situations which are impossible for me but possible with God.

You are now involved in vocations promotion - what helps you in this role?

The conviction that my colleagues have that God is still calling young people. This fact has been made clearer to us recently having spent a few hours listening to six young women. Some of them made it clear to us that they felt called to Religious Life, but weren't sure which Order.

If you were given absolute power for a day -; what would you change about the way the sisters are now?

A simpler lifestyle, a clearer identity (not the habit) and more opportunities for coming together as community. Taking more risks in addressing the needs of our time
