Membership/New Membership Sisters of St John of God are women who have freely responded to a call by God to Apostolic Religious Life, who profess publicly to live the vows of celibate chastity, poverty and obedience, and to participate in Christ's liberating Mission in the world.
Becoming a Sister of St John of God Are you wondering what your vocation in life may be? Have you considered being a Sister of St John of God today? What to do: Come and See! Meet the Sisters and share our hospitality. We will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. Questioning does not mean you are making a commitment. Join us for a weekend and have a closer look at the John of God way of life, spirit and work. Keep in mind that every life journey is an individual one, and once you experience the feeling of been drawn to a way of life, you have a choice to respond in whatever way you wish. There is an Enquiry Stage This is a period of time, when, with the help of a Vocation contact Sister you will discern where God is leading you. This will vary with individuals and may take one to two years. The Application Stage When you and the Vocations contact Sister journeying with you, have mutually agreed that you are called to a life as a Sister of St John of God, a written application is made to the Province Leader The Pre- Candidacy Stage The form and duration of the pre-novitiate period is determined by the Province Leader. This time gives you an initial understanding of the life you are contemplating. You will continue your discernment through participation in community, prayer and ministry. The Novitiate Stage Following successful candidacy, you are received into the novitiate. Life in the Congregation begins with entry into the novitiate. During this time you will continue your discernment more deeply, through prayer, study and ministry while living in community. During this time you are guided by the Director of Formation. Temporary Profession Temporary vows of celibate chastity, poverty and obedience are generally taken for three years. The Province Leader in consultation with her Council, may extend this period for a sufficient reason, but not longer than nine years. During this time you will continue to be guided by your Formation Director. Perpetual Profession Final profession will be preceded by a period of intensive preparation, which will be under the guidance of the appropriate Director of Formation, followed by final commitment as a Sister of St John of God.
